This is the front page of the Atlantic Monthly, published in 1990, written by Bernard Lewis. The picture itself tells all. But if you wanna read and see how the Huntingtinian idea on the so-called “Clash of Civilisations” origined.

  1. …”But Islam, like other religions, has also known periods when it inspired in some of its followers a mood of hatred and violence.”

i think lewis, like many social science people, has a flawed understanding of events and things. And this flawed understanding also supports degeneration of reality and history commonly seen in the media.

turning back to lewis, islam does not inspire anything. how could it both florish culture and inspire mood of hatred. that mood of hatred is not something which is inspired by islam. it is the result of economic exploitation for long long years. The fight for oil etc.
İslam also is not reason for the cultural boom seen in the miidle east. the social and ecoonomical relations and their structure was ready to make a further move towards modernisation. The rise of the mercantilist economy, commerce and their common effect gave rise a to religion which extremely rational compare to catholic dogmas. this gave rise to a cultural florishment in the arab penninsula, islam is a consequence as new ideology, not reason by itself.
i guess this lewis guy sucks.

and i also believe that lewis is quite undelibrately carrying out a harmful mission with reagard to turkey. reading his article i see more that he is the ideological pioneer of moderate islam project, the green belt plan put into force against soviets or forces that may be threatful to us interests in asia as well as turkey.

    am i wrong?

  3. thanks for your comments emre.
Lewis is for me not just an individual, but an organic intellectual. His ideas like all other ideas serve some purpose and someone. Our job is to figure out for whom. and once we follow the line we come to huntington and the neo-conservatives.
